How are we promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion?
At Richmond Hospital, health authority and medical staff are working together to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) from the perspective of patients, staff, and the organization as whole.

Enabling equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across the organization

With EDI as a key organizational pillar, the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Cultural and Environment Committee is supporting efforts to help ensure:

  • Everyone has access to resources to meet their potential (equity);
  • Understands, appreciates, and celebrates diversity in all its forms (diversity); and
  • Are included and seen (inclusion).

Benefits of promoting EDI

  • For patients, EDI means better care, clinical outcomes, satisfaction, and addressing health inequity.
  • For staff, EDI means fair treatment, wellness, a feeling of connection, and a sense of belonging.
  • For the organization, EDI means improved productivity, increased creativity and resiliency, and better staff retention.

Activities

  • Presentations at Medical Staff Luncheons on different cultural celebrations (i.e., Chinese New Year, Persian New Year, etc.)
  • Quarterly staff meeting education sessions on EDI
  • Physician workshops (e.g. inclusive language)
  • Leader discussion groups (e.g. AMAC Chair, Dept heads) and workshops on inclusivity, leadership, and unconscious bias
  • Promotion in Richmond Hospital Physician Society newsletters and posters

Lessons and success factors

  • Gaps in understanding the principles of EDI limits engagement
  • The importance of partnership/endorsement by all levels of leadership
  • Limited capacity of medical staff to participate
  • Continual /additional needs for funding and administrative support

“Through this work, we are able to increase the awareness of equity, diversity, and inclusion within Richmond Hospital. Our vision and future goal is to continue to promote EDI through different workshops, presentation to leaders and staff, and hopefully expect to Richmond community and care.” – Dr Eliza Chan
