Engaging for patient quality: BC Pediatric Quality Improvement Practitioners Network
BC Children’s Hospital medical staff are removing silos to create a BC Pediatric Quality Improvement Practitioners (BCPQIP) Network to advance opportunities for improving care quality for patients.

“We hope to strengthen the infrastructure for spread and scalability of innovative practices across the campus and beyond." - Dr Sandesh Shivananda

Building a Sustainable QI Network

The BC Children’s Hospital's BC Pediatric Quality Improvement Practitioners (BCPQIP) brings together physicians who have an interest in QI to network with QI colleagues on a regular basis, share knowledge, receive guidance/advise and help further spread QI work.

Engaging quality leads, health authority leaders

Drs Tiffany Wong, Mia Remington and Samdesj Shivananda acting as co-chairs built the network with funding from SSC’s Facility Engagement Initiative and Health System Redesign.

They reached out to Quality Leads within each hospital division, physicians who have participated in PQI, Hudson scholars and others who expressed an interest in QI. They conducted a needs assessment survey and used the results to guide their direction. Regular quarterly meetings have been established and include Health Authority leaders.

QI projects: Asthma education, medication, nutrition

Through the network, a number of diverse QI projects have been presented and discussed, including a multi-disciplinary approach to asthma education, prescription medication equity and a parenteral nutrition program.

Also, Dr Wong worked with the Faculty of Medicine DARPT committee to develop a promotions package where a doctor could be promoted based on QI work from Clinical Instructor right up to Full Professor.
